Skin tone tool

Company: American Breast Care

Date: May 2020 – July 2020

Role: Product Manager/Lead Designer

What: Create a tool that represents skin and nipple color combinations when a patient is ordering her custom breast prosthesis at a retail location. (This tool is pre-loaded onto all of the retailers’ iPads)

Client relationships at American Breast Care are key to success. Both B2B (us and the retailer) and B2C (the retailer and the patient). Since we are servicing the retailer first and foremost, we need to make sure none of their sales or reputation are jeopardized, especially for something as simple as color choice.

Background

A custom breast prosthesis offers women who have had breast tissue removed a non-surgical option to replenish fullness in their chest and give them a new sense of “normal.” Two of the customizations in ordering this breast prosthesis are skin and nipple colors. To improve the color selection process, this color swatch box was created to allow patients to lay the swatch against their own skin to make an informed (and nonrefundable) decision.

"Can I return this and switch it out for a new color?"
-Patient
"My patient was very surprised to see the breast prosthesis coloring--she said she would have chosen a different nipple color had she seen the final product."
-Retailer
CHALLENGES
  • The case is bulky and makes traveling to different store locations cumbersome
  • The swatches aren’t giving an overall image of final product
  • Client expectations aren’t well-managed. These products are nonrefundable since they are custom-made for each woman
OPPORTUNITIES
  • Utilize an accessible tool that is easy to travel with
  • The retailers already have an iPad they use to run a successful appointment
